What Is Plasma? And, How It's Made?

what is plasma?

You may have learned about the three states of matter solid liquid and a gas in your classes.

But, did you know that there is a fourth state of matter exists, "Plasma".

Now, in today lesson we will learn about Plasma.

ice, solid state of matter

First, let's start by thinking about ice.

solid to liquid, change of state of matter

So, when ice is sufficiently heated, it melts to form water. And therefore it's undergone a change of state from a "solid to liquid".

As you know that in solid, all of the particles are closely packed in a fixed position.

And therefore it has a fixed shape and volume.

But on other hand, the particles in a liquid are still touching one another, and also are able to move around each other.

Therefore a liquid still has a fixed volume. But it doesn't have fixed shape, it takes the shape of their container.

water is heated to 100 degrees Celsius

Now think that, what is the change of state occurs. when water is heated to 100 degrees Celsius?

As you know, water evaporates from the liquid to a gas, and form "Water Vapour".

The particles in gases are further away from one another. But it take the shape and volume of their container.

Now Come To The Exact Topic, And Talk About What's "Plasma" Exactly?

plasma, fourth state of matter

Now, for certain substances. If we continue apply heat to the gaseous form of matter. Another change of state occur.

In this high temperature environment, substances go from a gas to a state of matter called "Plasma".

very strong heat must be applied for plasma

For this change of state to occur, very strong heat must be applied on the gaseous form of matter.

What The Properties Of "Plasma"?

electrons are stripped out from their respective atoms
free electrons and positive ions in plasma

When heat is sufficiently strong, the electrons are stripped out from their respective atoms. And create free electrons and positive ions.

Plasma is neutral overall
Plasma is neutral overall

Because, there are both negative and positive particles, Plasma is neutral overall. As there are equal amounts of oppositely charged particles.

The Special Property, That Separates A "Plasma" From "Gas".

Plasma can conduct electricity

Because free electrons are present in Plasma. Substances in Plasma form can conduct electricity.

gases cannot conduct electricity but Plasma can

This is what separates a gas from Plasma. Because all gases cannot conduct electricity but Plasma can.

Is "Plasma" Occurs In Nature?

lightning is plasma

Northern Lights is plasma

Yes, plasma occurs in nature. Actually, lightning and the Northern Lights are the examples of Plasma.

stars exist in Plasma form

And, if we were to go far beyond the planet Earth, stars also exist in Plasma form.

In fact stars are really just hot balls of Plasma.

Actually, 99% of the visible matter in the Universe is in the form of "Plasma".

Plasma Is Everywhere In Our Daily Life.

fluorescent light bulbs and neon signs are made of plasma

Plasma is found in fluorescent light bulbs and neon signs

electrical current passed through the mercury vapour

Actually, when an electrical current is passed through the Mercury Vapour in fluorescent light bulbs

mercury strip their electrons and to create Plasma

It heats up the gases sufficiently, to strip their electrons and to create Plasma.

fluorescent light electrodes

Also, plasma screen TVs are made possible due to this state of matter. A plasma screen is made of many thousands of tiny dots called "pixels"

Which are made of three fluorescent light electrodes emitting the colours "Red", "Green", and "Blue".

plasma TV screen

And, the combination of these colours can make any possible colour. Which is why we can see all the colours on the TV screen.

higher pixels, higher definition

The higher number of pixels, the higher the definition and the images will appear sharper and more detailed.

And if today's you learn something and know different facts about fire.
